Leave notes on a lesson and read what your student wrote back.

Every lesson has a **Discussion** thread in its drawer where you and your student can leave comments for each other: a question about the directions, a note on what to fix, or a well done.

## Leaving a comment

1. Open the lesson by clicking its card on **Today** or **Upcoming**, or from a submission card or notification.
2. Scroll to **Discussion** at the bottom of the drawer.
3. Type in the **Add comment** box and click **Add comment**.

Each comment shows the author's name and the date. Comments from a parent carry a **Teacher** badge so a student can tell them apart.

## Who gets notified

A student's comment notifies every parent in the household; a parent's comment notifies the student, if they have their own sign-in. The notification is titled "{Name} commented on {Lesson}" and shows the start of the comment. Clicking it in the alerts bell opens the lesson.

The events are **Comment from your student** and **Comment from your parent**, both on by default, delivered by email, in-app and push according to each person's settings. See [Notifications](https://www.openskyplanner.com/support/notifications).

## Where else comments appear

**Homeschool Activity** on your home page logs every comment ("commented on"), with the lesson title linking to the drawer.

## Visibility

Comments are visible to everyone who can open the lesson: all parents in the household and the student. There is no private comment. For notes only parents should see, use the teacher notes on a grade. See [Grading lessons](https://www.openskyplanner.com/support/grading-lessons).

Activities and events have no discussion thread; comments are for course lessons.
