The grading and reporting tools OpenSky offers, from grades per lesson to transcripts and portfolios.

OpenSky keeps the records a homeschool needs, from the grade on a single worksheet up to a transcript. Each layer is built from the one below it, so the more you record during the year, the less there is to assemble at the end.

- **Lesson grades** — grade each lesson as it is completed, from the lesson drawer or the gradebook, as a score, Pass / Fail or a proficiency level, with a private teacher note if you want one. See [Lessons](https://www.openskyplanner.com/support/grading-lessons).
- **Grading styles** — decide per course whether to grade every lesson, give the course one grade as a whole, or not grade it at all. Credits and transcript designations live in the same place. See [Grading styles](https://www.openskyplanner.com/support/grading-styles).
- **Grade weights** — set how much tests, quizzes, lessons, activities and labs each count toward a course's calculated grade. See [Adjusting grade weights](https://www.openskyplanner.com/support/grade-weights).
- **Gradebook** — one page per student and school year with every course's grade, credits and hours, the GPA, hours by Core, Non-Core and Elective, and the student's test results and awards. See [Gradebook](https://www.openskyplanner.com/support/gradebook).
- **Attendance** — days present and absent are recorded on the calendar and counted into the portfolio. See [Attendance](https://www.openskyplanner.com/support/attendance).
- **Transcripts** — a PDF transcript generated from the courses, grades and credits on record, with your school details in the header. See [Transcripts](https://www.openskyplanner.com/support/transcripts).
- **Portfolios** — a PDF of a student's year: school and teacher profiles, attendance, a progress report, the daily log and samples of their work. See [Generating a portfolio](https://www.openskyplanner.com/support/generating-a-portfolio).

## Where it all starts

Records hang off the school year. A course shows on the gradebook, and on a transcript, once it has been put into a school year under **Manage grades**, and attendance is counted against that year's dates. If you have not set one up yet, start with [Adding a new school year](https://www.openskyplanner.com/support/adding-a-new-school-year).

Students see their own grades in the lesson drawer unless you turn that off, and can be allowed to enter grades themselves. See [Permissions](https://www.openskyplanner.com/support/permissions).
