This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and how we comply with applicable privacy laws, including the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
1. Who This Policy Applies To
This policy applies to:
• Parents or guardians who create and manage OpenSky accounts
• Students, including children under 13, whose profiles are created and managed by parents
• Visitors to our website or mobile application
2. What We Collect
We collect only the information necessary to provide and improve OpenSky's homeschool planning tools.
a. Information provided by parents or guardians:
• Name and email address
• Password (encrypted)
• Homeschool name or organization
• Zip code and country (for optional compliance support)
• Payment information (if subscribing to a paid plan)
• Curriculum, schedules, and documents you upload
b. Information provided about or by students:
• First name (or nickname), grade level, and course assignments
• Progress tracking, including lessons completed, pacing, and reflections
• Notes, uploads, or assignments submitted by the student
• Reflections or responses students enter (e.g., "I struggled", "I crushed it")
c. Information collected automatically:
• Device type, browser type, IP address
• Cookies (for login sessions, preferences, and analytics)
• General usage data (pages visited, time on platform, clicks)
• When you arrive from one of our ads, an ad click identifier set in a first-party cookie (see Section 6)
We do not collect geolocation data, biometric data, webcam/mic access, or sensitive personal identifiers like Social Security numbers.
3. Student Accounts and COPPA Compliance
OpenSky allows parents to create profiles for students, including children under the age of 13. In some cases, students may log in directly (e.g., to view checklists or submit reflections).
Because we collect personal information from children, we fully comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Here’s how:
a. Parental account creation:
A verified parent or guardian must create the primary OpenSky account and each student profile. No child can create their own account independently.
b. What students may be asked to do:
With parental approval, students may:
• View their personalized checklist
• Mark lessons complete
• Reflect on their understanding or engagement with a lesson
• Upload assignments or notes
c. Verifiable parental consent:
We obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting any data directly from a student. This occurs when a parent:
• Creates a student account
• Grants login access to that student
• Acknowledges that the student may enter data within OpenSky
d. How we use student information:
Student data is used only to support their educational experience. For example, to:
• Generate personalized checklists
• Track course progress
• Offer pacing projections or supplemental materials
• Enable parents to see how students are doing
We never use student data for marketing, profiling, or advertising purposes.
We never share a student's name, email address, login, or any learning data (lessons, progress, grades, reflections, uploads) with advertising platforms. Advertising measurement (Section 5) applies only to the parent or guardian account holder.
e. Parent rights:
Parents can:
• View all data collected about their student
• Edit or delete student profiles
• Permanently delete their entire account and all associated student data
• Request a copy of student data at any time by contacting support@openskyplanner.com
If you believe a child has submitted information to OpenSky without parental consent, please contact us immediately.
4. How We Use Your Information
We use personal information to:
• Provide and maintain your account and dashboard
• Enable student-specific tools like checklists, routines, and pacing
• Help you generate transcripts and portfolios
• Analyze usage trends to improve the product
• Send service emails (e.g., account updates, new features)
• Measure whether our advertising is working (see Section 5)
We may use aggregated, non-identifiable usage data for internal analytics or to improve our product — but this data cannot be traced back to individual users.
5. Who We Share Information With
We only share your data with trusted service providers who help us operate OpenSky, such as:
• Cloud hosting and database providers
• Payment processors (for subscriptions)
• Error monitoring or analytics tools
• Advertising measurement partners — Meta, Reddit, and OpenAI (ads)
All third-party vendors are contractually required to:
• Use your data only to perform services for OpenSky
• Maintain industry-standard security
• Never use or sell your data for their own purposes
Advertising measurement. When a parent or guardian signs up, starts a free trial, or subscribes, our servers send a conversion event to the advertising platform that referred them (Meta, Reddit, or OpenAI). That event contains a hashed (SHA-256) version of the account holder's email address and account ID, their IP address and browser type, the ad click identifier, and the event type and plan or price. It never contains any student information or learning data. We use this only to understand which ads lead to signups; these platforms may match the hashed email to an account on their own service under their privacy policies.
We never sell or rent personal information — including student data — to advertisers or marketers.
6. Cookies and Tracking
We use cookies to:
• Keep you logged in
• Remember your preferences
• Measure usage patterns (via analytics)
When you arrive from an ad, we set a first-party cookie holding that ad's click identifier so we can report a resulting signup back to the platform (Section 5). We do not load third-party advertising pixels or scripts, and we do not track you across other websites. No advertising identifiers are collected on student-facing pages.
You can disable cookies in your browser settings, but some features may not work properly.
7. Data Security
We take data security seriously. Measures include:
• HTTPS encryption for all web traffic
• Encrypted storage of sensitive user data
• Secure authentication and session management
• Limited access to personal data by OpenSky staff
• Regular backups and monitoring
While no system is 100% secure, we actively work to protect your information and respond quickly to any breach or concern.
8. Data Retention
We retain user data only as long as necessary to provide services.
• If you cancel your account, we retain your data for 30 days in case of reactivation. After that, it is permanently deleted.

9. International Users
OpenSky is based in the United States. If you are accessing the platform from outside the U.S., your data will be processed in accordance with U.S. privacy laws, which may differ from your country’s laws.
10. Your Rights and Choices
You may:
• Access and update your profile or student data at any time
• Delete specific records or your entire account
• Export a copy of all data tied to your account
• Opt out of non-essential communication
