OpenSky keeps two profiles for you, and they are worth filling in even if nobody else will ever read them. Between them they answer the two questions every homeschool record has to answer: what is this school, and who is teaching.
- School Profile — your homeschool itself: its name, where it is, how you teach, and photos of it.
- My Profile — you: your background, qualifications, and education.
Both feed straight into the first two pages of a generated portfolio, so the half hour you spend here is the half hour you do not spend every time you need records.
Your School Profile
- Click your profile icon in the nav and go to Settings.
- Click School Profile in the left nav.
- Click Edit profile, make your changes, and click Save changes.
What you can fill in:
- School name and Tagline — the name that heads your records, and a short line under it.
- Logo — click Change logo to upload one.
- About us — a description of your school. This is the paragraph that introduces you on a portfolio, so it is worth writing properly once.
- Our library — describe the library you use.
- Philosophy tags — how you teach. Pick from suggestions like Charlotte Mason, Classical, Eclectic, Montessori, Reggio Emilia, School-at-Home, Traditional, Unschooling, Unit Studies and Waldorf, or type your own. The suggestions are only suggestions, so describe your family in your own words if none of them fit. You can add up to 12.
- Address, Main phone, Founded, and Schedule type.
- Photos — up to 20 pictures of your school, which appear as a mosaic on your profile and can be included in a portfolio.
School details used to live on My Profile. They moved here when My Profile became a page about a person rather than a school. If you filled these in previously, they have come across — nothing was lost.
Your own profile
- From Settings, click My Profile (the first item in the left nav).
- Edit your details and save.
What you can fill in:
- First name, Last name, and Location.
- Photo — your avatar.
- About me — a short introduction. Tell families a little about yourself.
- Contact — your Phone. Your email is shown here too, but it is changed from Billing & Passwords rather than on this page.
- Qualifications — short credentials, up to 12 of them.
- Education — your Degree and Institution, with start and end years. Leave the end year blank and OpenSky shows Present. You can list up to 10.
Each parent in your homeschool fills in their own My Profile. If you have invited another parent, their details are theirs to edit, and a portfolio can include either or both of you.
Where this shows up
- Portfolios. The Homeschool Profile and Teacher Profile sections of a generated portfolio are built entirely from these two pages. If a portfolio section looks thin, this is where to fix it.
- Your public profile. If you have turned on a public profile under Settings → Public Profile, your school's details are what other families see.
Nothing here is required to teach with OpenSky. Lessons, the checklist and the gradebook all work with both profiles empty. These pages exist so your records can describe your school without you retyping it every year.
