Signal check-ins

Read the Signal check-ins that show how a course is going for a student.

Updated

Signal asks a student a quick question after some of their lessons and keeps the answers, so you can see how a course is going without asking every day. It is on by default for every student with their own sign-in.

What the student sees#

When the student marks a lesson complete or submits it for review, the green confirmation sometimes turns into a check-in card. It asks How did that go? with five faces: Rough, Meh, Okay, Good and Great. One tap answers it, and the course name sits at the bottom of the card.

  • Rough or Meh gets one follow-up: What made it rough?, with Too hard, Boring, Needed help or Too long.
  • Occasionally a better rating gets a longer set, one question at a time: How hard was it?, Did you get help?, Was it interesting? and Could you explain this to someone?

The X closes the card at any point. Answers already given are kept. Lessons marked complete by a parent never prompt.

How often it asks#

Signal is deliberately light:

  • At most three prompts a day per student, across all their courses, and the longer question set at most once a day.
  • A course is not asked about until three of its lessons are done, and after a prompt the next three completions in that course go unasked.
  • Only one card shows at a time. A lesson finished while a card is open is not prompted.
  • Submitting a returned lesson again does not prompt; the first time counts.

Where the answers go#

Answers belong to your homeschool and are never shared with third parties. Parents see them in the Homeschool Activity feed on the home page, as "rated 4/5" or "skipped the check-in on" next to the lesson. Students do not see their past answers.

Turning Signal off#

Open the student's page, click the Student Portal tab, expand Learning and switch off Signal: Curriculum fit insights. The student stops getting check-ins. See Permissions.
