Overview

What does an example school day look like?

A walk through a typical day for a parent and a student using OpenSky.

Updated

Here is how a school day runs for a parent on a laptop and a student with their own sign-in on a tablet.

Morning: the parent checks in#

  1. The day before open Upcoming in the nav. Select yourself, "Your name (Me)", which shows two queues: Ungraded, completed work waiting on a grade, and Submitted for review, work a student has handed in. See what needs to be done for tomorrow.
  2. Then pick each student and look at the rest of their week, move things around to balance workloads. OpenSky automatically reschedules courses if you want to move something out a day.

The student works through Today#

  1. The student starts their day on their own. They open Today and start working.
  2. Tapping a card opens the lesson drawer: the Directions, the Tasks to check off, and the Resources attached to the lesson. Required tasks have to be ticked before the lesson can be finished.
  3. When the work is done, the student taps the circle on the card. By default that is Mark Complete and the circle fills with a check. If the course uses the review workflow it reads Submit for Review instead, and the circle shows a clock while the lesson waits for you.
  4. A question goes in Discussion at the bottom of the drawer. A photo of the work goes in Student Submissions with Upload.

Afternoon: the parent reviews#

  1. Submitted lessons appear in your Submitted for review queue and under the bell. Open one, read the discussion and the upload, then click Mark Complete, or add a note in Discussion and click Return for revision. A returned lesson lands in the student's Needs revision group.
  2. For courses that grade every lesson, completed lessons wait in Ungraded. Enter the grade in the drawer and the card clears.

What happens on its own#

Completing a lesson marks the student present for the day, and the grade goes straight to the gradebook. Anything not finished today shows under Overdue tomorrow. See Attendance, Gradebook and Overdue lessons.
